domain name expiration notice email scam

Domain Name Expiration Notice Email Scam

Internet scams are nothing new and as we highlighted before they can arrive via email or even in the mailbox. The most recent scam warns of domain name expiration and has fooled a couple of our clients. The email pictured above uses language that scares business owners into thinking they have to pay quickly:

Don’t miss out on this offer which includes search engine submission for YOURDOMAIN.COM for 12 months. There is no obligation to pay for this order unless you complete your payment by Apr 18, 2013. Our services provide submission and search engine ranking for domain owners. This offer for submission services is not required to renew your domain registration.

Failure to complete your search engine registration by Apr 18, 2013 may result in the cancellation of this order (making it difficult for your customers to locate you using search engines on the web).

Always make sure your domain name renewal is coming from the company you registered with. We always recommend our clients to check with us before paying any web related bills.

DNS Services Scam bill mail copy

DNS Services Bill Scam

We recently received calls from several clients asking if they should pay the “bill” from DNS Services for hosting and email servers. This was a surprise to us because we provide hosting and email services for these clients. Once the bill / invoice was scanned over to us, we quickly saw the scam. Notice the second paragraph,

“This is a solicitation for the order of goods or services or both and not a bil, invoice, or statement of account due. You are under no obligation to make any payments on account of this offer unless you accept this offer.”

This type of scam usually succeeds with the accounting department and busy small business owners who quickly pay what looks to be a real bill. If you receive this “bill” feel free to trash it or respond with a bill of your own, for wasting your time.
